like a diy brick-shithouse frak feel like they are preparing for some nasty. kicking off the track with some serious drums. eerie synth lines and creepy bass pads lend for a slightly deranged and unsettling feel. there is a strange air about this track. tuff snares kick in that galvanise and ready the troops. the strange difference between the everyday title and the militant feel of the track makes for interesting concoction. its like a bunch of psychos preparing for a dinner party. sweeping the floor and combing their hair to precision. the house might look nice and the cake might be delicious, but these guys psychos.

kernkraft translates as nuclear power and from the outset reverberating sequences visualise a bleak working environment. mechanical sequences rotate. clouds of sparking particles swirl overhead menacingly. a kick drum stumbles into actions, the machine has powered up. cold hi-hats shimmer, and hollow synths give the feel of some sort of labouring workforce continuing their daily grind. this doesn t feel like a nice environment to live in and reflects the reality of some peoples everyday life. living to work for the greater good and sacrificing their lives in the process. it is a powerful piece. strong, monotonous and mechanical.

lb aka labat is a regular cat in the french circuit with releases on disques solaires, dko or recently wolf music. this ep highlights once again his unique style with an all inside mpc production blending samples with sharp signature beats. the opener is stone cold disco house jam in the deep parrish tradition. nothing new is a spacey hip hop joint taking you a ride to destination spice go - a detroish hip house beat. on flipside, celestial plan is a special party break with deep jazz samples mixed with a mpc signature that gives this track a very uncommon signature and groove. better be ready for this one before landing to sticky green countryside.

sami baha is a turkish producer based in south east london. his music was introduced to the world via his 2016 ep “mavericks” (planet mu), recorded while he was moving from istanbul to london where he’s now been living the last 3 years. sami got into producing through being a rapper himself, working with local rappers in turkey and producing beats for them, before setting his sights outside the country.
while his first record was focused around a more familiar trap based hiphop sound, “free for all” expands its range into more unfamiliar territory and also brings his production into focus by featuring a number of mcs from all corners of the globe: uk drill squad 67’s dimzy, stockholm’s yung lean and chicago rapper and singer dj nate (aka flexxbabii) who’s previously recorded on planet mu as a footwork producer. the record also features the rowdy sing-song of egyptian mcs dawsha and abanob from cairo whom sami met while on tour in egypt.

lyon beatsmith saint paul made an impressive full debut in 2017 with his introspection ep on moonrise hill material (which he co-runs with his boys folamour, ethyène and kaffe crème). after tasty contributions to v/as on the likes of apparel wax and fhuo, the frenchman is back with another solo record on dc s better listen records. the naturist behavior ep is a tastefully balanced, warm-weather oriented four tracker. the title track and the a2, a hawaiian trip, explore playful and jazzy territories. meanwhile, the flip hosts moodier ventures via the bittersweet boogie of tell me- and the ice cold late night jam, feels good.

twin tribes is a dark synth duo based in brownsville, texas. formed by luis navarro (vocals, guitar, synths, drum machines) and joel niño, jr. (bass, synths, vocals) in 2017. they gather their influences from the dark side of the 80s. darkwave, post-punk and cold wave are only some of the genres that the band summons using analogue synthesizers and drum machines, bass and guitar. dark melodic sounds, lyrics of the undead, the occult and parallel universes are what conjure twin tribes.

yagyas rigning album from 2009 is the icelandic producer s most acclaimed dub, techno and minimal masterpiece. due to popular demand, delsin are now re-issuing it across three slabs of vinyl. previously only available as a double pack with eight tracks, the new re-mastered version features all 10 of the tracks from the original cd. gumundsson has been making music for years both solo and as part of the thule musik collective. he is an album specialist who has worked as yagya since 2002 and has put out six albums since then. they come on labels like force inc and sending orbs where rigning was first released and manage to be both absorbing and detailed yet suitable for relaxing background listening. his last two albums, sleepygirls (2014) and stars & dust (2016) appeared on delsin records. rigning is essentially one long track split into movements. it depicts a city sleeping as gentle rain falls and dubbed out grooves zone you out. yagyas style is always patient and slow burning, his grooves are long and drawn out and his pads reach up into the heavens. this whole album in coated in a warm fuzz and is a real comfort on dark, long, cold nights. as insular and melancholic as it is, there is also plenty of beauty in the melodies and delicate keys. from dark and gloomy to more optimistic and meditative, there is a sophistication throughout this always cinematic album that continues to make it stand out nearly a decade after it was first released.

one can imagine, listening to kontravoid’s latest release, an alternate reality in which the cold-war played out to the background of drum machines and spectrographs, sinister audio technology manipulating a hidden frequency of the world’s unfoldings. cameron findlay returns to his masked alias for the first kontravoid release since his debut self-titled album, years in the studio reap their rewards as the production on ‘undone’ effortlessly cuts its way through hypnotic dance floor compositions.

following the u.s. army’s liberation of munich in may 1945, the world’s first amerikahaus was inaugurated there with a library, a magazine reading room, a children’s library, a record and lm department, and lecture and seminar rooms, together with a concert hall and exhibition space. up to 80.000 people a month utilized the offerings of amerikahaus during its early years. beginning in 1953, the united states information agency (usia), an institution founded as an instrument of the cold war, began to finance amerikahaus. in addition to representing the u.s., its principal task in west germany was to democratize and denazify the postwar population. after the beginning of the cold war, many of these re-educative measures also served as propaganda in a programmatic linking of democratic and economic principles meant to strengthen transatlantic relations against the communist bloc. in 1997, the u.s. government concluded its work at amerikahaus in munich and shipped almost all its items back to the states. however, 1.630 long-playing vinyl records from the library were left behind in cardboard boxes in the basement. when michaela melián looked through this forgotten collection, one of the first things she came across was don gillis’ 1940 tone poem »portrait of a frontier town«, whose second movement is entitled »where the west begins«. don gillis, a composer and radio producer, used the musical styles and genres of that decade to create an explicitly american program music. michaela melián’s »music from a frontier town« is fueled by the diverse sonic material of this extensive record collection once considered as an instrument of cultural education. this record has been produced in addition to melián’s twenty-four hour performative music installation »music from a frontier town« in the garage of what is now the bavarian center for transatlantic relations at karolinenplatz, munich (4-5 may 2018).

a compilation of minimal wave from around the world (1980-1991), the bedroom tapes features rare, unreleased, and licensed tracks all the way from belgium to australia to japan. the bedroom tapes excitedly marks minimal wave’s 66th release and is a follow up in the series to the lost tapes, the found tapes, the hidden tapes and of course the minimal wave tapes. the twelve artists on this compilation mostly recorded their music onto 4-track tape in their bedroom studios. the sounds on this record range from german new wave to experimental electronic, to early industrial body music from the swedish countryside, to dreary melodic minimal synth. the theme is music recorded in the bedroom for listening in the bedroom. the bedroom tapes presents songs from pink elln, karen marks, disque omo, vorgruppe, iham/echo, perfect mother, arvid tuba, subject, denial, unovidual, aural indifference, and autumn all lovingly remastered. limited edition of 999 numbered copies, pressed on 180 gram vinyl, and housed in heavy printed jacket accompanied by printed inner jacket with artists photos and info. thank you to all the artists and friends for support in making this happen.
